Chapter 3

An Addiction

She didn't message him for two days.

He understood. He'd taken her apart with words and left her holding the pieces, and she needed time to decide whether to rebuild the walls or leave them down. He gave her the silence. It cost him everything. Every hour that passed without her name on his screen was an hour spent pacing the narrow corridor of his flat, checking his phone, setting it down, picking it up again. The group was quiet too. She'd told AustinDominator and the others she was taking a few days off. Real life. Busy. Talk soon.

He didn't believe it. He knew what she was doing. She was sitting in her house with her oblivious boyfriend, staring at her phone, running his words through her head like a film she couldn't stop rewinding. "You like the power." Three words that had peeled her open like a fruit.

He wanted to reach out. The urge was physical, a pulling sensation in his chest, like a hook behind his sternum. He drafted messages and deleted them. Opened the chat and closed it. Put his phone in a drawer and took it out again eleven minutes later. He was pathetic. He knew that. A grown man lying on a sofa in Folkestone, obsessing over a woman he'd never seen, whose name he didn't know, who was probably sitting in a kitchen in Picardy drinking tea and wondering what kind of stranger could read her like a book from across a sea.

On the third day, at half past midnight, his phone buzzed.

"Oise_88 (PM): I've been thinking about what you said."

"NorthForeland (PM): I know."

"Oise_88 (PM): You're insufferable."

"NorthForeland (PM): I know that too."

"Oise_88 (PM): I'm not angry."

"NorthForeland (PM): You said."

"Oise_88 (PM): I'm not angry. I'm. I keep trying to find the part where you're wrong and I can't. Every time I think I've found a crack in your logic, I realize I'm just trying to make it untrue because the truth makes me feel. Exposed. And I don't like being exposed. But I also haven't felt this seen in. I don't know. Ever. And I don't want to stop."

He read the message twice. His chest ached.

"NorthForeland (PM): I don't want you to stop either."

"Oise_88 (PM): I want to show you something."

"NorthForeland (PM): You can show me anything."

A photo appeared in the chat. He tapped it.

It wasn't sexual. It was a view from a window. A countryside. Flat fields stretching to a tree line, the sky a heavy, bruised gray, the light thin and silver. An old stone wall in the foreground, moss-covered, with a single red geranium in a clay pot balanced on top. The image quality was ordinary. Phone camera, no filter, no angle. Just a window and a view and a moment she'd decided to share with him.

He stared at it for a long time. Not at the fields or the sky. At the window frame. At the edges of the image where her life bled into the frame. A curtain, slightly visible, cream-colored. The faintest reflection in the glass, too blurred to make out, but enough to confirm she was there. She existed. She had a window and a curtain and a view and a red geranium and she had chosen to give it to him.

"NorthForeland (PM): It's beautiful."

"Oise_88 (PM): It's just a field."

"NorthForeland (PM): It's not just anything. You chose to show me. That makes it the most important field in France."

A pause. Then another photo. The kitchen. A table. A mug of tea, steam rising. A book open face-down beside it. The light was warm, yellow, a overhead lamp. The table was old wood, scarred. On the wall behind, barely visible, a calendar with a landscape photo. No personal photos. No fridge magnets. No evidence of a shared life beyond the generic.

She was showing him her solitude. The space she occupied when the performance was off. He understood immediately.

"NorthForeland (PM): That table has stories."

"Oise_88 (PM): It has rings from mugs. That's about it."

"NorthForeland (PM): Same thing."

Another photo. This one made his breath catch. Her hand. Just her hand. Resting on the table beside the mug. Pale skin, slender fingers, no rings. A thin silver bracelet on her wrist. Her nails were short, unpainted. It was the most unsexual and most intimate photograph anyone had ever sent him. She was giving him a piece of her body without giving him her body. A fragment. A proof of existence.

"NorthForeland (PM): You have beautiful hands."

"Oise_88 (PM): They're just hands."

"NorthForeland (PM): Nothing about you is just anything."

"Oise_88 (PM): You do that a lot."

"NorthForeland (PM): Do what?"

"Oise_88 (PM): Take something small and make it feel enormous. I send you a photo of a field and you make it sound like a painting. I send you my hand and you make it sound like poetry. I'm not. I'm just a woman at a table drinking tea."

"NorthForeland (PM): You're a woman at a table drinking tea who took the time to photograph it for a stranger she's known for two weeks. That's not nothing. That's a choice. And choices are the truest things about people."

Silence. Then:

"Oise_88 (PM): Can I see you?"

The question landed like a stone in water. He stared at it. She wanted to see him. Not his handle. Not his words. Him. The actual, physical, imperfect man behind the screen. He felt the familiar pull of self-hatred, the voice that said "she'll see you and she'll leave." The voice that said "you're not enough." The voice that lived in the dark spaces and whispered the same thing every time someone got close.

But she'd shown him her hand. Her field. Her kitchen table. She'd given him fragments of herself without asking for anything back. And he was tired of hiding.

He picked up his phone. Opened the camera. He was sitting on his bed, the lamp on the nightstand casting a warm amber light. He took the photo from below, chin to forehead, half his face in shadow. Stubble. Dark eyes. The hint of a furrow between his brows. He looked tired. He looked like someone who didn't sleep enough and thought too much. He looked like himself.

He sent it.

Nothing for almost a minute. He could feel his pulse in his throat. He was already composing the apology, the exit strategy, the graceful retreat he'd executed so many times before.

Then a voice note. Eleven seconds.

""Oh.""

Just that. One syllable. But the way she said it. The breath before it. The softness. The slight crack on the vowel. It wasn't disappointment. It wasn't surprise. It was recognition. The sound a person makes when something they've imagined suddenly has a face.

"NorthForeland (PM): Is that a good oh or a bad oh?"

"Oise_88 (PM): It's a. I need a minute."

"NorthForeland (PM): Take your time."

"Oise_88 (PM): You look like your writing. Does that make sense? Like your words sound. I don't know. I imagined you and I was right. That's never happened before."

"NorthForeland (PM):I don't know if that's a compliment."

"Oise_88 (PM): It is. Trust me. It is."

Another photo from her. The collar of a jumper. Cream-colored, soft-looking wool. The hollow of her throat. The edge of a jawline. No face, not fully, but enough. Enough to see the skin. Enough to imagine the rest. Enough to make his mouth go dry.

"NorthForeland (PM): You're killing me."

"Oise_88 (PM): Good."

He could hear the smile in that single word. The teasing. The power. She was enjoying this. She was enjoying the effect she was having on him, the way her fragments were dismantling him, the way she could send a photo of a collarbone and reduce him to a man staring at his phone with his heart hammering. This was the power he'd named. The one she hid. The one she didn't want to admit she had. And here it was, glinting like a coin in shallow water.

"NorthForeland (PM): I want to see more of you."

"Oise_88 (PM): Like what?"

"NorthForeland (PM): Like everything. But I'll take whatever you give me."

A photo. Lower. The jumper had shifted. The neckline draped off one shoulder. The skin was pale, almost translucent in the lamp light. The ridge of her collarbone. A faint shadow beneath it. No face. Still no face. But the body was emerging from the shadows like a landscape revealed by slow dawn.

He was hard. The realization was almost embarrassing in its speed and intensity. He shifted on the bed, adjusting, and typed with thumbs that were slightly less steady than before.

"NorthForeland (PM): You're beautiful. I don't even need to see your face to know that. The way you hold yourself. The way your shoulder slopes. The way you're giving me pieces like you're testing whether I'll stay for the whole picture. I'll stay. I'll stay for every piece."

"Oise_88 (PM): You're very desperate."

"NorthForeland (PM): I'm very honest. It looks the same."

"Oise_88 (PM): No. I've seen honest. This is different. This is. I can feel how much you want me through the screen. It's. A lot."

"NorthForeland (PM): Too much?"

"Oise_88 (PM): No. Not too much. I just. I'm not used to being wanted like this. It's making me feel things I didn't. I didn't expect this."

"NorthForeland (PM): What things?"

"Oise_88 (PM): Powerful."

He closed his eyes. The word sat in his chest like a coal. Powerful. She felt powerful. He'd named it two days ago and she'd run from it, and now she was claiming it, wearing it, letting it warm her. And the fact that she felt powerful because of him, because of his wanting, because of the visible, embarrassing intensity of his need, was the most intoxicating thing he'd ever experienced.

"NorthForeland (PM): You are powerful. You have me. You know that, don't you?"

"Oise_88 (PM): I think I'm starting to."

"NorthForeland (PM): Good. Use it. I'm yours to use."

It started slowly. The way everything between them started. A gradual escalation that felt less like a choice and more like gravity.

She paired her toy for him. Private session. Just them. The connection chimed and he had the controls and she was waiting.

But this time was different. This time she sent a photo while he held the slider. Not sexual. Not explicitly. Her leg. Bent knee. The hem of the cream jumper riding up her thigh. Pale skin against dark sheets. The curve of her calf.

He pushed the slider to fifteen percent.

"NorthForeland (PM): I can feel you through the controls. The way the toy sits inside you. I can see it in my head. You're on your back. Your knees are bent. The jumper is riding up because you're shifting."

"Oise_88 (PM): Yes. How do you."

"NorthForeland (PM): Because I'm paying attention to the rhythm of your body through the feedback log. When you move, the pressure changes. When you're still, it's steady. Right now you're moving. You're grinding against it. You can't help it."

"Oise_88 (PM): Putain. Yes. I am."

"NorthForeland (PM): Twenty."

She gasped. He heard it in the voice note she sent, a four-second clip of a single sharp inhale. He played it twice. His hand was in his boxers. He hadn't planned it. His body had made the decision without consulting his brain and now he was holding himself, hard, aching, while he controlled the pulse of a toy inside a woman he'd never touched.

"NorthForeland (PM): I want to hear you. Properly. Not voice notes. Can I call you?"

"Oise_88 (PM): On here?"

"NorthForeland (PM): On here. Just voice. No video. Just you and me and the toy and the sound of you breathing."

"Oise_88 (PM): Okay. Yes. Call me."

He pressed the call button. The app connected with a soft chime. Silence. Then her breathing. Closer now. Real-time. Not a recording. Not a clipped voice note. The actual, live sound of a woman in a bed in northern France, breathing.

"Can you hear me?" Her voice was quiet. Careful.

"Yes." His voice was low. Rougher than he wanted it to be. "I can hear you."

"Good." A pause. "I can hear you too. You sound. Different than the voice notes."

"Different how?"

"Closer. Like you're in the room."

He pushed the slider to twenty-two percent. She made a sound. Not a moan. Not yet. Something before a moan. The precursor. The tremor in the earth before the quake.

"More," she said.

"Tell me what you want."

"I want. I want to hear you too. Not just me. I want to know what you sound like when you. When I affect you."

He closed his eyes. His hand was still wrapped around himself. He hadn't moved yet. He'd been holding still, keeping the tension, letting it build, because the building was the part he loved. The ache before the fall.

"I'm touching myself," he said. Quiet. Honest.

She inhaled sharply. "You are?"

"Since you sent the photo of your leg. I couldn't help it. You did that to me."

"Tell me. Tell me what you're doing."

He told her. In low, measured words, he described the way his hand was wrapped around himself, the way he was holding still, the way he was aching. He told her about the pressure and the heat and the way his body responded to the sound of her breathing. He was explicit. Not crude. There was a difference. Crude was mechanical. Explicit was intimate. He told her the truth of his body and the truth was that he was desperate for her, that he'd been desperate for days, that the wanting had become a physical weight he carried everywhere.

"Move your hand," she whispered. "I want to hear."

He moved. A slow stroke. The sound he made was involuntary. A low, rough exhale that came from somewhere deep in his chest. He heard her respond to it, a small, sharp breath, and the feedback log showed her body pressing harder against the toy.

"Again," she said. "Do it again."

He did. Slower. The sound was louder this time. A groan that he tried to keep contained but couldn't. It escaped the way water escapes a cracked dam. Not all at once. In pulses.

"Putain," she whispered. "You sound. I can feel that sound in my stomach."

"Twenty-five," he said, and pushed the slider.

She moaned. Properly. Full and unguarded and raw. It was the sound he'd been waiting for. Not the polite, managed sounds she made in the group. Not the breathless thank-yous. This was the real sound. The sound beneath the performance. The sound of a woman who had stopped managing and started feeling.

"Keep going," she said. "I want to hear you keep going."

He stroked himself again. Slower. Deliberate. He let the sound come without containing it. A low, rhythmic breathing that matched the pace of his hand. She could hear everything. The quiet wet sound of his hand moving. The shift of the sheets. The catch in his breath when the sensation peaked.

"You're going to make me come," she gasped. "Just from hearing you. Just from. Putain. The sound of you."

"Not yet. I'm not ready."

"I'm. I can't. Please."

"Thirty."

She broke. Her breathing shattered into fragments. He could hear her fighting it, trying to hold on, trying to wait for him, and the effort was in every strained sound she made. He stroked himself faster. Not much. Enough. The sound shifted. Deeper. More urgent.

"Now," he said. "Come with me."

She cried out. Not a scream. Something more private. A sound that lived in the throat, raw and involuntary. He heard her body convulse through the phone, heard the sheets twist, heard the breath catch and release in a shuddering wave. He followed her. The pressure that had been building for days crested and broke. He came with a low, groaning exhale that he couldn't have silenced if he'd tried. His whole body tightened and released and the sound that came from him was the most honest thing he'd ever offered anyone.

Silence. Both of them breathing. The phone a bridge between two countries, two beds, two people who had never touched and had just come together in the dark.

"Are you okay?" she whispered. The old pattern. The caretaker. Checking on him.

He almost smiled. Almost. But his chest was too full.

"I'm more than okay. Are you?"

"Yes. I. Yes." A pause. "That was."

"I know."

"Your voice when you. When you finished. I've never heard anything like that. It sounded like. Like something being released. Like something that had been held for a very long time."

"It had."

"Can we. Can we do that again?"

He almost laughed. Not at her. At the relief of it. At the simple, honest wanting in her voice. She wanted him again. Not the toy. Not the performance. Him. His sounds. His breathing. The specific, embarrassing, desperate way he fell apart.

"Give me five minutes," he said.

"Five minutes?" She sounded impressed. And pleased. And that pleasure, that small satisfaction in her voice at his recovery time, was the power again. Glinting. Hers.

"Maybe less if you keep talking in that voice."

"What voice?"

"The one that sounds like you know exactly what you're doing to me."

A soft laugh. Warm. The accent thick and honeyed. "Maybe I do."

He was already hard again. The wanting hadn't dissipated. It never did. That was the thing she was about to learn about him. The climax wasn't an ending. It was a pause. The hunger didn't stop. It just reset and rebuilt, and each rebuild was faster than the last, and the sounds he made each time were different. Less contained. More raw. He was a man whose body didn't know how to stop wanting, and she was a woman who was discovering that she loved that. Loved being the cause of it. Loved the power of it.

He pushed the slider to ten percent. She inhaled.

"Again?" she whispered.

"Again."

"Already?"

"Already. I told you. You do something to me that doesn't stop."

"Show me."

He stroked himself slowly. Let her hear the first breath. The catch. The low hum in his chest. She pressed against the toy and the feedback log showed her moving, grinding, chasing the pulse.

"Tell me what you're thinking," she said.

"I'm thinking about your throat. The photo you sent. The hollow. I want to put my mouth there. I want to feel your pulse against my lips."

She made a sound. Small. Fractured.

"I'm thinking about your hand. The one in the photo. I want those fingers in my mouth. I want to know what they taste like."

"Putain."

"I'm thinking about the sound you just made when you came. I want to hear it again. I want to hear it every night. I want to fall asleep with that sound in my ears."

"Twenty," she gasped. "More. Please."

He pushed the slider. Twenty. Twenty-two. Twenty-five. Her breathing was ragged. His hand was moving again, stroking, the sound of it quiet but present, and she could hear it through the phone and she responded to it, her body tightening around the toy with every sound he made.

"I'm close again," she breathed.

"I know. I can hear it. Your breathing changes. It gets higher. Tighter. Like a string being pulled."

"You notice everything."

"Everything about you."

"Come with me this time. Please. I need to hear you."

He let go. The second climax was different from the first. Less explosive. Deeper. It came from somewhere lower, somewhere more primal, and the sound he made was a long, low groan that vibrated through the phone. She followed him over, her cry sharper this time, almost surprised, as if the second one had caught her off guard.

Breathing. Both of them. The phone warm against his ear. The wind outside his window. The distant sound of the sea.

"How," she said, still gasping. "How are you ready again so fast?"

"I told you. You do something to me."

"It's not normal."

"It is for me. It's always been like that. The wanting doesn't stop. It just. Rests. And then comes back. Harder."

"That's. That's a lot."

"I know. I told you. I'm too much."

"You're not too much. You're. I don't know what you are. I've never met anyone like you."

"Broken."

"Stop. Don't call yourself that."

"It's what I am."

"It's not all you are."

He didn't answer. She was right and she was wrong. It wasn't all he was. But it was the foundation. The bedrock. Everything else was built on top of it, and the structure was unstable, and he knew it, and he was letting her climb onto it anyway.

They did it four more times that night.

Not all with the toy. The third time, she talked him through it. Her voice low, steady, commanding in a way she never was in the group. She told him how to touch himself. How slow. How tight. She told him when to stop and when to start and he obeyed her without question, and the power dynamic flipped so smoothly it felt like breathing. She was in control. Not of a toy. Not of a slider. Of him. Of his body. Of the sounds he made and the pace he kept and the moment he was allowed to fall.

The fourth time, he used the toy on her while she listened to him stroke himself. They timed it. His sounds matching her breathing, the slider climbing in sync with his hand. When they came, it was within seconds of each other, and the dual sound through the phone was something he would replay in his head for weeks.

The fifth time, she sent him a photo. Her body. Not fully visible. The jumper pulled up. Her stomach. Her ribs. The curve of her waist. No face. Still no face. But the skin. The shape of her. The reality of her body, existing, warm, offered.

He came looking at that photo with her voice in his ear, saying his handle like it was a name. Like it was the only word she knew.

The sixth time, they didn't come at all. They just lay on the phone, breathing together, the toy at a low hum, his hand still, her voice a whisper. She talked about the fields. The sky. The stone walls. He talked about the sea. The cliffs. The wind. Two people in two beds in two countries, connected by a thin invisible thread of sound, describing the landscapes of their lives as if mapping the distance between them.

"I want to see your face," he said.

"I know."

"When?."

"I don't know. I'm not ready."

"That's okay."

"Is it?"

"Yes. I'll wait."

"You keep saying that."

"Because I keep meaning it."

She was quiet for a long time. He could hear her breathing slow. Evening out. The sound of someone settling into rest.

"NorthForeland?"

"Yes."

"I think I'm in trouble."

"So am I."

"Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Oise."

He hung up. The phone was hot against his ear. He set it on the pillow beside him and lay in the dark, listening to the wind, and for the first time in years, the darkness felt less like an absence and more like a room. A room with someone in it.
